A school self-evaluation of teaching and learning in the area of Oral Language in Scoil Bhríde was undertaken during the period February to March 2013.

With regard to the teaching & learning of Oral Language, our school has strengths in the following areas:

1. Implementation of a structured, spiral co-ordinated oral language plan that takes account of oral language targets / curriculum objectives specifically set for pupils in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class standards.
2. That these plans be: - Specific; Measurable; Attainable; Realistic & Time-framed
and that they reflect the context from which this school operates, taking account of pupil background, learning needs and home environment.
3. That there is a structured part of each school day timetable given over to oral language (discrete oral language time, timetabled)
4. That the following strategies be implemented for assessment
6. Updating of resource and continual professional development for teachers will underpin any further development in the oral language programme.

- Teacher/pupil motivation and openness to improve oral language in the school.
- Prior experience in planning in the area of Literacy for Reading and Writing.
- Access to ICT, high proficiency in ICT and audio visual support plus hands on materials that prompt/initiate oral language lessons.
- A positive school environment where planning and collaboration are part of school culture.
